On the Road to Turning Trash to Treasure

The Citizenry of South City 1 will soon be a formidable force as it rallies around green initiatives like segregation and collection of E-Waste and Textile Waste so that it reaches responsible Recyclers.

We had the second instance of E-Waste collection on the 16th of April 2024. For this purpose, a collection Bin has been placed at B 84, by Saahas NGO. An old washing machine, some CPUs and a sound bar along with a Woofer, were all on the last leg of their journey towards being recycled. In all 171kg of E-Waste was collected from South City1.

On the 20th of April, Slim Homes, in collaboration with Saahas Zero Waste, collected 219 kg of Textile Waste from various points of collection across our colony. The wearable clothes will be distributed to those in need. What is more interesting is that the clothes which are torn and in tatters used and worn-out dusters and undergarments, and shreds of cloth from tailoring units, all of which fall in the “Reject” category, are on their way to be down-cycled to make felt mostly, which is used as sound-proofing material.

Our Plastic Waste collection program is already in place though it needs to be augmented. We are working towards handling our kitchen waste; some pockets of our colony as well as individual householders are already composting. With glass, paper, cardboard etc going to the kabadiwalla, we will be left with very little reject waste which needs to be dealt with at the landfill. Sadly, the level of waste segregation at the source (homes) has fallen drastically from where it was at about 65% some months ago. Presently most of the waste from our colony is given as mixed waste which finds its way to the Bandhwari Landfill which has a fire raging on it even as I write. Charity begins at home and so does waste segregation.

Having said that, it is indeed very heartening to see the gradually increasing involvement of our community in effectively handling different categories of our domestic waste. From the looks of it, we as a community, are paving the road towards a greener future for our children and grandchildren.
