The Peaceful Candle Light Vigil

The Peaceful Candle Light Vigil on 18th August, at Leisure Valley Park was a continuation of the #WeWant-Justice #Women Reclaim The Night movement that has brought thousands and thousands of women and men out of their homes to protest against the brutal rape and murder of the young doctor in RG Kar medical college hospital Kolkata – across the country and even abroad.

It was a non-partisan protest. Without any political agenda. The demand was very simple- “ Immediate and speedy trial and exemplary punishment for the real culprits”

The 700+ people that gathered was a ripple effect of a call on social media. Two days back on the 16th when we got permission for the Candle Light Vigil, we posted on social media. Our posts were shared and reshared and further shared because each one of us wants Justice. Because every individual standing there had the same demand “Justice” Justice for Tilottama – justice and safety for all the women.

Residents from all walks of life, different professional and social backgrounds, residents from near and far – New Gurgaon, Manesar, Sohna road even Delhi had joined. There were more than 100 doctors, a huge number of dentists from IDA. There were people from different age groups and profession who joined because they all related to the cause. The protest in no time and yet very organically turned into a platform for the emotional release of many including a lot of young girls! It’s time we understand that gone are the times when such protests would happen when a heinous crime happens and then within a few days we get busy with our lives until another happens to shake us up!

This protest has to continue until we get justice! Yesterday it was at Leisure Valley Park tomorrow someplace else by someone else but the protest should not stop until we get justice!
