Problem
Unless handled effectively, Horticulture Waste poses a problem of: 1. Mounds of unsightly waste piling up in parks, green belts and on the road sides, 2. Danger of catching fire as happened in early January of 2024, in the B Block Park South City 1
3. Seeing a heap of horticulture waste, people start throwing mixed garbage onto it.
Where does the horticulture waste originate?
• Parks • Pruning of trees either by Residents or DHBVN or the Horticulture Dept itself • Seasonal leaf fall • Homes, terrace, kitchen gardens and lawns in the plot/floor
Who is responsible for handling the Horticulture waste?
• In a plotted colony, primarily MCG is responsible, but RWA can assist, provided there are funds to help in the disposal/management of the Waste. • Residents have a civic responsibility towards making concerted efforts towards keeping our immediate surroundings clean & hazard-free.
What can we Residents do to help solve the issue of Horticulture Waste?
• Compost our household horticulture waste along with our kitchen waste. • Promote and engage in leaf composting in the parks in our respective areas. • Ask household staff to send the horticulture waste from the lawn/kitchen garden to a local site for composting and not keep it on the road.
How can MCG help?
• Provide a list of dedicated staff or contractors for each colony with the weekly roster for tractor trolleys. • Allocate space and resources for creating infrastructure within the colony in parks and green belts for composting of leaves locally to reduce its transportation and • MCG Cleaning staff should ensure that all horticulture waste is collected at the authorized location for composting in the colony • MCG must be informed if any agency like DHBVN does tree pruning in an area so that it can coordinate for its proper disposal.
