Wrong Side Driving Trend Continues In Noida Amidst The Changed Motor Vehicle Act

The Sector 77 main road is the main vehicular access to many of the residential societies eg, Prateek Wisteria, Elite Homz and many more from the Noida Metro corridor or link road. It is a left-in/left-out intersection and no right turns are allowed in the main road & link road junction. Since the area is developing rapidly, a variety of people started to move into their dream homes/apartments. It is found that wrong-side driving cases are growing day by day. Traffic coming from Sector 74,75 and 76 and travelling towards 77 take a wrong side turning at the mouth of the intersection.

Every week and month traffic police team along with various NGOs and traffic volunteers from 7X sectors try to create awareness of wrong side driving. Have you wondered why our behaviour doesn’t change?

Just to save time or save fuel is not the reason but it’s that they boost their thrill appetite.

But the fact is they take many lives in this act and endanger many right drivers’ lives and even the pedestrians fear for life when they see zip zap wrong side vehicles often leading to fatal road accidents. The menace of wrong-side driving caused 9200 deaths in the year 2019, among which 2726 occurred on National Highways. In 2020, wrong-side driving was responsible for 6% of accidental deaths.

As individual citizens, we often ask and demand our rights from government and administrative bodies but do we not realise that we too have duties to follow especially when we are driving two or four-wheelers in any city or village?

We need to follow these rules strictly. Our cities have cameras across the main roads now so we have a third eye to support smart traffic policing as well as able traffic volunteers and traffic police to watch these wrong drivers on the roads. E-Chalan are regularly sent to citizens and this is an extra burden on anyone’s pocket amidst inflation.

As a driver, you must be aware of the traffic rules and the possible penalties for their violation. The ever-growing traffic volume on Indian roads makes it challenging for the traffic authorities to maintain order. So, you must drive responsibly to ensure the safety of all.

As per law under Section 279 of the Indian Penal Code states that any person who drives or rides a vehicle in any public way recklessly endangering human life or injuring others, would face legal consequences. The penalty under this section is up to six months in jail, a 1,000 fine, or both.

Never drive under the influence of alcohol, as this may endanger your life and the lives of many others. You may end up paying a fine between ¹ 2000- ¹ 10,000 depending on the alcohol limit in your blood. While driving a two-wheeler, you must put on your protective headgear for yourself as well as a pillion rider for safety and to avoid a challan of ¹ 1000. Skipping a red light now attracts a penalty of ¹ 1000. Cell phone use is prohibited under Section 184C of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988.

Overspeeding endangers your life and the lives of other road users. So, you must drive your vehicle within the specified speed limits. Third-party motor insurance is mandatory under the Motor Vehicle Act, of 1988.
