A workshop on ‘Segregation of Organic Waste for Recycling and Treatment’ was held in Sector 41.The workshop was organised by the RWA in association with an NGO. The representatives of the NGO a good number of residents and many maidservants actively participated in it.
The team gave a very impressive presentation on the scope of solid waste management in the present scenario. Effective briefing was made on the source segregation and composting of organic wastes generated from the houses. They shared the process of segregation explaining item wise categorisation of dry and wet garbage normally generated from houses to ensure the clarity up to grass route level (serving maids). This aspect helped a lot to avoid mixing of dry and wet garbage by mistake or due to confusion.
Waste segregation is the need of the present day situation prevailing in Delhi & NCR where air pollution has reached a dangerous level. In segregation process solid waste is segregated into organic and inorganic form. “Organic waste” are materials that are biodegradable and comes from plant and animals and can be broken down by other organisms over time. In simple words organic waste is referred as ‘wet waste’ consists of vegetables, peels, fruits, bones, egg shells, hair, cooked food, wood pieces and paper which are quickly disintegrated. Other than organic waste is called as “inorganic waste”. This consists of mainly plastic, bottles, polythene, and metals, ceramic, glass etc. Organic waste is converted into Compost while major part of inorganic waste is recycled. In this way waste is reduced into a small quantity which goes to landfill site. Home is the first place where waste is generated if waste is segregated.
The participants got highly benefitted by getting their doubts clarified on waste management system by the faculty through direct interaction. The domestic help and maidservants were given gifts and refreshments as token of appreciation.
