We the residents of A block have always had grievances against the government authorities whether it is the MCG or DHBVN and neglectful treatment from them. Very clearly this urban pocket which consists of around 985 registered voters, votes very meagrely and trivially. In the last general elections, only 12% of people voted! If we compare other blocks such as C block out of 3000 voters a much better number came out to vote because of the population of the block.
It is usually seen that political parties and elected representatives look at different areas based on the voting that is done from there. An area with a higher voter turnout in the elections holds the power to draw the leaders’ attention towards their area and hence bring about change.
If A Block can improve its voting percentage, even with less number of voters, it can match the number of votes made by C Block, which would eventually draw eyes to A Block. Our elected leaders will start to take A Block more seriously and hence bring about development.
If we residents do not even come out to vote, how do we ask our elected representatives to change things for us?
When citizens vote, they can hold their leaders accountable for their actions and promote transparency and democracy. The numbers are very discouraging and if we want A block to get all the support from the government including say in DHBVN, our street lights, road cleaning, park maintenance etc..let’s do our bit and vote.
