Water scarcity in the city has hit DLF hard. For over a month, we have all been struggling with the ongoing water crisis impacting our colony, with J, M, and N blocks facing the most severe shortages. The existing water storage capacity is insufficient to meet basic needs during the scorching heatwave. The supply from GMDA is erratic and unable to cater to the rising demand in the city.
Almost 60 residents gathered in M Block Park on May 16th to share their plight and discuss the next steps to protest with DLF and GMDA about this critical issue. The MCG Councillor’s office also reached out to GMDA to address this crisis.
DLF authorities facilitated an open house with GMDA and MCG officials and the agitated residents of DLF 1, 2, and 3 on May 22nd at K Block Community Centre. Unfortunately, the session yielded futile results, as GMDA officials cited power cuts and short supply affecting the entire state as reasons for their inability to help. However, DLF Vice President Mr. Nitya Mohan assured his support by attending to complaints and supplying additional water tankers as soon as possible. DLF teams have inspected supply pipelines and replaced pipes in some sections of M Block to improve water flow.
The agencies have also enforced penalties for those using potable water for construction sites or wasting it on washing cars or house yards, by GMDA orders.
The long-pending construction of an underground tank in J Block remains stalled, with only empty promises from MCG, GMDA, and DLF. The proposal has received technical approval and is undergoing rounds of tender issuing. Mr. Mohan assured residents during the May 22nd meeting that he will expedite the tube-well work once work restrictions are lifted post-election results.
Aggrieved residents continue to approach authorities to address this unbearable crisis.
A group of people met with GMDA CEO Mr. Srinivasan, Chief Engineer Mr. Rajesh Bansal, and Exn Mr. Abhinav Verma to express their dissatisfaction with the lack of assurance from GMDA during the earlier session. The officials again cited power cuts during supply times as a major issue affecting the release from the main line. Mr. Srinivasan has directed his teams to expedite work on the J Block tube well.
Residents, however, continue to face the ‘heat,’ relying heavily on private tankers charging up to Rs. 2000 each. The added summer issues of power cuts and temperatures soaring to 50°C offer no respite. We sincerely hope all authorities come together to work constructively to resolve this issue at the earliest.
