Rains at one time were considered a blessing and they still do for many. But for the residents of Defence Colony, it sometimes becomes a scary episode. One heavy downpour leads to flooding of basements, waterlogged roads etc. Residents having lifts going to basements are suffering from a peculiar problem. Ground water coming in the pits of lifts ultimately causing damage to the equipment. The cost of repairing the lift is not included in the maintenance contract of the lift. Currently there are more than 20 lifts affected. Don’t know how many more as we rarely open the pit of the lift which is generally done during servicing? The water comes at such speed where 25 to 40 buckets of water can be seen in the pit?
The question comes why is this happening? It has never happened for past so many years.
According to some, it’s the bad water proofing done by builders in the lift. Pit floors are not concretised.
But the main reason is the rise in water level in the colony which has come upto 20 feet leading to even water coming from the pit walls. Experts say that the only remedy is a process called poly grouting where the walls are injected with a chemical through nipples drilled in the wall which make foam blocking the water to seep in.
I think that these are all temporary solutions and this issue will only be resolved when the ground water recedes which takes a lot of time. Thanks to everything that is concretised courtesy so much construction taking place, the water has nowhere to go.
