Waste Management in Vasant Vihar – VVWA Perspective

MCD is the nodal agency for carrying out waste management services in Vasant Vihar in accordance with Waste Management Rules 2016. MCD has mandated VVWA to carry out waste management in all six blocks of Vasant Vihar. In turn, VVWA has mandated Chintan to carry out door-to-door collection of waste.

Chintan has been chosen because they are duly registered with MCD. They have a very impressive track record, especially in NDMC areas. As a matter of fact, NDMC, last month, signed a detailed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Chintan to offer and cover a whole range of waste management services. Their work has the approval of MCD, with whom we have held quite a few tripartite discussions. There is, therefore, nothing illegal about the appointment of Chintan by VVWA.

Chintan has specialised rickshaws for their work. We write to confirm that waste collected by Chintan from A-block is not being taken to any Dhalao but is being segregated at a separate location. Therefore, no waste is dumped in the A-block Dhalao. Chintan is also currently working in C-block, and they will soon be starting work in E-block. As and when the work in E block picks up, we will ensure that no waste collected by Chintan reaches any Dhalao in this block. This will hold good for every subsequent block.

It is important for us to state that neither VVWA nor Chintan are responsible for keeping the Dhalaos clean. This is the function of MCD, who have contracted SSIL with this task.

As everyone knows, MCD has commissioned a Fixed Compactor Transit Station (FCTS) in Vasant Vihar. All dry waste is being transported to the FCTS from where it is being compacted for recycling.  As regards wet waste, arrangements are being made to set up compost units. An initial start has been made in C-block, where we will convert wet waste into manure.

It is imperative that all houses segregate their waste into dry and wet waste. Once this happens, it will be possible to make Vasant Vihar into a zero-waste colony. This will also help control pollution in the city to a good extent.
