The Def Col Sports Complex in Defence Colony is a dynamic and well-facilitated venue that fosters community spirit through a variety of sports and recreational activities. It offers three floodlit tennis courts (one synthetic and two clay), two pickleball courts (with plans for a third), a walking track, and four cricket practice nets. The complex also has an open ground where athletes can engage in physical training, such as skipping, weightlifting, and yoga. Located near Dr. Radhakrishnan International School and the Defence Colony Club, the sports complex serves as an important recreational resource for the area. However, some aspects of the complex could be improved to enhance the overall experience for users.
The following recommendations are proposed to the Club Committee for consideration:
1. Entrance and Parking Management: There is a need for better organization at the entrance and parking areas. Installing a bicycle rack for 6–10 bikes and placing clear signage for parking areas would improve accessibility. Additionally, painting parking lines and expanding the gate guard’s duties to manage parking would help keep the area neat and orderly.
2. Landscaping and Aesthetic Enhancements: To improve the aesthetic appeal, it is suggested to convert unused open spaces into well-maintained green lawns and flower beds. Introducing shade-tolerant plants and engaging a professional horticulturist to design the landscaping would enhance the visual appeal, particularly in the spring season.
3. Furniture Upgrades: Replacing the current lightweight plastic furniture with more durable cast-iron outdoor furniture would be a valuable investment. Though the initial cost may be higher, the durability and long-term savings make it a worthwhile upgrade.
4. Improved Washroom Facilities: The current portable toilets should be replaced with permanent restrooms that include changing areas and showers. These facilities should be regularly cleaned and maintained to ensure high hygiene standards, especially given the sports-oriented nature of the complex.
5. Refreshment Facilities: A refreshment kiosk offering tea, coffee, biscuits, and cold drinks would be a great addition. Coordination with the Defence Colony Club for a tea station would provide a space for members to relax post-game. Additionally, installing vending machines would offer non-members easy access to snacks and beverages.
6. Def Col Club & Sports Complex Connection: Re-establishing the corridor linking the Defence Colony Club with the sports complex is recommended.
In conclusion, implementing these suggestions would significantly elevate the functionality, aesthetics, and overall experience of the Def Col Sports Complex. These improvements would
1. Enhance user satisfaction 2. Increase the market value of Defence Colony. 3. Exponential Return on Investment. Play hard, stay healthy, and stay safe!
