The Prime Minister’s vision of a garbage-free India under the Swachh Bharat Mission has inspired sanitation drives nationwide and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has taken commendable steps in this direction. However, one pressing issue in New Friends Colony remains unresolved: the removal of the Dhalao (garbage collection point) and adjacent urinal on C.V. Raman Marg New Friends Colony.
This Dhalao serves as a collection point for garbage from New Friends Colony, despite the presence of two other Dhalaos in close vicinity. Its location at the colony’s entrance, a critical junction connecting the Ring Road and Modi Mill flyover, has become a source of severe inconvenience and health hazards.
Impact on Health and Environment
The Dhalao contributes to deteriorating air quality due to the stench and emissions from decomposing waste. Overflowing garbage often spills onto the road, creating an unsightly mess and attracting pests. The nearby market area also suffers from poor sanitation, affecting businesses and residents alike. The situation poses a direct threat to public health and the environment, diminishing the liveability of this once-pristine locality.
Traffic Woes
The location of the Dhalao exacerbates traffic problems, as waste collection vehicles disrupt the flow of vehicles on the busy C.V. Raman Marg. The resulting congestion adds to commuter frustration and hampers accessibility for residents and visitors.
Unfulfilled Promises
Despite multiple assurances, the issue persists. The Mayor of Delhi Mr. Mukkesh Suryaan & Dr. Shelly Oberoi , area councillor and MCD officials, including a dedicated team from the Central Zone under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner, have visited the site and acknowledged the problem. However, no concrete action has been taken, leaving residents in the lurch.
This negligence is especially baffling given New Friends Colony’s designation as an “A” category colony, with its residents contributing among the highest taxes to the Delhi Government and MCD. Ironically, the living conditions here rival those of “G” category colonies in terms of infrastructure and sanitation.
Removal of the Dhalao and urinal from C.V. Raman Marg New Friends Colony is not a mere request but an urgent necessity for the health, safety, and dignity of New Friends Colony residents. Civic authorities must take immediate action to relocate these facilities to a less disruptive location and restore the area’s cleanliness and livability.
The residents’ patience is wearing thin, and they deserve swift and effective solutions. Addressing this issue would not only fulfil the vision of a garbage-free India but also rebuild trust in the authorities’ commitment to ensuring a higher standard of living for its citizens.
Together, let us make New Friends Colony a model for clean and sustainable urban living.
