Many of us might be wondering and curious to know about the various species of plants/trees that we keep seeing during our walks/jogs in the Meghdutam Park. To satiate the thirst of all such uninitiated souls, Ishtiyaq Ahmed — a nature conservationist from Grow More Trees Trust — took a motley group of interested people, including a good number of kids, around for a Tree Walk in the park on a crisp Saturday morning of 16 November. He shared details about the flora of the place, for a good two hours or so.
Shankh pushpi, Kachnar, Kadamb, Hanging bottle brush, Chakresia, Kaner, Bamboo grass, Ficus panda, Ficus virens (pakad, pilkhan), Ficus racemosa (goolar), Chudail papdi, Banyan tree, Kanak champa, Neem tree, Saptaparni, Bakain, Sheesham, Ashok tree, Gamhar, Maulishree (giving orange berries), Champa (frangipani), Pine tree, Ashwagandha, Bhumi Amla and Amla, Pride of India (jarul), Mahua, Harad (triphala comprises of amla, harad and baheda), Tesu (palash, flame of forest, dhak ke teen pat used for making pattals), Green semal, Parijat (harsingar), Sita Ashok, Rataul mango tree etc. were some of the species identified and described by him.
The therapeutic experience was possible thanks to the efforts of ‘Meghdutam Rangmanch’ which had organised the walk as a part of the Meghdutam Fest 2024, held in November. We hope to see many more events happening in the park in the time to come. For many of the early birds who had shifted and made the societies in this part of Sector-50 their homes till 2008, or so, it might have been a gradually unfolding revelation to see Meghdutam Park transformed over the years into a beautiful verdant forest from the desolate arid patch of land it was.
Over the years since then, we have seen those numerous saplings (planted during the last 15 years) grow into full blown trees of various hues and sizes forming fascinating cascading canopies over the entire park.
