Car owners saved by a hair’s breadth
A gulmohar tree fell on a moving car on the evening of 27th November near gate number 7 of Gulmohar Park. The people traveling in the car escaped with minor injuries and were saved by a hair’s breadth.
In the late evening of 27th November a Hyundai car was approaching gate number 7 to exit the colony. A young boy and a girl, siblings, were leaving for the gym and driving at a comfortable speed. As they approached the exit at gate number 7, they were alerted by the guard stationed at the gate about the tree that was falling onto the road. Upon noticing this, the driver of the car immediately put the car in reverse and tried to back out. As a result of this prompt action by the guard and the driver of the car simultaneously, the tree landed half on the bonnet and half on the front windscreen. The wind screen shattered and some shards of the glass fell inwards injuring the occupants of the car.
However there were minor cuts and bruises on the face and arms of the brother and sister but they managed to escape unhurt. The guard informed the RWA, who promptly reached the site and helped the occupants of the car, who are residents of C33 to come out of the vehicle and were escorted to their residence.
The tree was removed the next morning by around 9:00 a.m. and the car could be extricated from beneath the fallen trunk. Though a major mishap was averted, it is indeed scary to realize that there are many more such gulmohar trees around the colony that are hollow from inside due to termites and other causes and are waiting to keel over anytime. Hope the MCD horticulture department wakes up to this very real threat and do a survey of all such potentially dangerous trees around the colony and to remove them before they can become fatal.
