Creative expressions are anything that stands out and appeals to human eyes and mind. It is magical! It affirms and glorifies life; awakens us to new perspectives, ideas and values. During my few visits to London, I visited many Art galleries and met a few artists. Dreamers… capable of transforming the future! And this was affirmed during the visit to Windsor Palace – a complete area dedicated to the drawings of the children of the Royal Family. Drawing, sketching, colouring, etching all connect one to its self and the world around. It empowers visualisation, expressions, memory and communication skills that help the individual to be a good leader. And this inspired me to inculcate Art and Craft as part of curriculum for underprivileged children.
Creativity complements teaching children languages, arithmetic, science and art, especially to the underprivileged children who face lots of challenges of life since their formative years. A six-year-old is asked to stay back to take care of a three-year-old and a newborn sibling. Help in household work and work with parents for livelihood. Atmosphere at home is normally tense.
So at Sunshine Society Centre, in Sector 93 Noida (After school study centre) where we teach children, Monday to Friday is also dedicated to Art and Craft, music and dance. This has provided children a creative outlet that has improved their problem-solving skills, thinking out of the box, explore topics in unconventional way.
When this Centre was started, just after COVID in March 2022, children were at home for almost two academic years; hence restless, chaotic, hyper-impulsive using abusive language and lacking interest in studies and an attention span of only few minutes. And now, we see a huge transformation in each one of our child – the twinkling eyes, smiles on lips, eagerness to learn more and experiment. Their annual academic results have been excellent. And they support each other.
They are blessed to have an exclusive Art faculty coming to teach them.
