Transforming Noida Into A Garden City

Noida too can become a garden city like Bengaluru, if it were to adopt the concept of ‘serial blossoming’. ‘Serial blossoming’ means there is at least one tree that is in bloom during each season of the year. Noida too can plant flowering trees that will keep the city in perpetual bloom.

Noida’s green cover is already the envy of other suburbs in the NCR. It has to only add color by planting flowering trees in the gaps and spots in its existing green cover. One can plant sequentially-flowering trees in the early phases of upcoming sectors.

In a few years, Noida can become the garden city of North India once it adopts the concept of serial blossoming.

(We sent the above note to the CEO of Noida Authority in the last week of June. Here is some supplementary historical information) Bengauluru’s overlapping flower seasons are no coincidence. It is the result of careful horticultural planning. Gustav Hermann Krumbiegel, a German botanist and garden designer, introduced the concept of serial blossoming in the early 20th century in the then Kingdom of Mysore.

SG Neginhal, an Indian forest official, created the green cover of Bengaluru. Neginhal’s team of volunteers planted more than 15 lakh trees in the city over a span of 5 years in the 1980s. The tree-lined avenues and boulevards of the Garden City of Bengaluru are his legacy.

Centuries ago, Ritusamhara, Kalidasa’s Sanskrit poem, celebrated the six seasons of the year with lyrical descriptions of around 40 native flowering plants. Bengaluru is a living example of Ritusamhara’s seasonal blooms. What is stopping Noida?

What Can You Do?
1.  Transform your neighborhood streets into a garden by planting flowering tree saplings in gaps/ spots around your apartment, and in your sector.

  1. Transform your apartment into a garden apartment by planting flowering trees, shrubs, hedges and creepers within your building.
  2. Individuals, RWAs, and federations could appeal to the Noida Authority to take action. Write to our local MLA and MP, urging them to pursue the idea with the administration.
