Traffic Vigilantes Unite: The Janpath Justice League!

Ggenerally do not visit the Forum section of the NoBroker Hood app as it is frequently full of complaints. I do not do well with cribs – they rob me of my peace – especially when I know that those complaints are never combined with action.

But, in May, a post by Ayesha Sindhu (14032) caught my eye. She had halted a car coming the wrong side of the traffic on Janpath and made him go all the way back to take a U-turn and come to the society from the right side.

You cannot imagine my glee at somebody actually doing something instead of just being a keyboard warrior. Kudos Ayesha! But it also brought a glaring problem to the forefront – that of not following traffic rules on Janpath.

This was not the first incident. My family once blocked a cab coming on the wrong side. We see habitual offenders, be they cabbies, guests or residents. And then we have the speed demons. Quite frequently, a bunch of youngsters brings their cars to Janpath to vroom and spin at a high speed.

Of course, there have been accidents. A couple of times, these offending cars themselves have gotten out of control and hit the curb. A few of our community dogs have already become casualties, ploughed down by speeding cars and dying miserable deaths.

Eventually, people may get run over by a speeding car, too. Or a jogger with earphones on may miss the car coming on the wrong side. It is a miracle that none of this has happened till now given that we have walkers, joggers and runners frequenting Janpath.

Good luck Hamletians! When you are out for a walk, watch out. Because of negligent driving, we or our loved one may get grievously hurt. We seemed to have learnt nothing, absolutely nothing from the Porsche Pune incident.

Are our lives so dispensable? Will we ever understand the value of human life? I hope the next time you see a car coming on the wrong side of Janpath, you will stop it and make it do the right thing. Or, if you see a car speeding, you will try to flag it down safely.

Let’s be doers, not complainers!
