Khwabghar recently hosted Reema Ahmad, the author of Unparenting: Sharing Awkward Truths with Curious Kids.
The book “Unparenting” examines the notion of parenting and criticizes conventional parenting techniques. Reema Ahmad explains the idea of “unparenting,” which means giving up the traditional way of parenting that puts more value on control and obedience than on mutual respect and trust. The aim of the book is to show a new way to raise children that focuses on building relationships with them based on trust, respect, and communication.
The book is about Reema’s journey and how she chose to keep an open conversation in her relationship with her son rather than the “medieval approach” of instructing the children and expecting obedience.
My first experience at KhwaabGhar was a great adventure from the minute I crossed the gate and stepped into the little sanctuary. Their welcome and hospitality make you feel at home amongst the books and stories.
Reema Ahmad talked about her book in a very conversational way, allowing us to experience some of the skills and benefits of conversation over control as discussed in her book. A fair number of non-parents had joined in as well, allowing the discussion about parenting habits and methods to be well balanced by the views of both the parents and the children on the other side of that parenting.
The meeting culminated with everyone present taking away a lesson or food for thought along with signed copies of the book.
