New Friends Colony

The Well Watered Footpaths

Surely, the caption, has caught your attention. While Delhi is struggling of water shortage, I must say, the footpaths, are well watered.

I am a resident, of Friends Colony West. As most of the other residents, I too, almost always, order the groceries, medicines and other daily requirements and get them home delivered. The other option, for us, is to drive, across the road, to fetch things,  ourselves. Every time I would get irritated seeing people walk on the roads rather on footpaths.

The other day, I had to buy some basic, over the counter, medicines. It was also time, for me, to go, for my evening walk. The weather being pleasant, I decided to walk to the pharmacy. Not realising, how the pleasant winds, would bring to my senses, a fragrance of flowers, mixed with a stench. The boundary walls, the footpath had stream marks and were wet, soaking with urine. At intervals, were men , standing flat against the walls, as they added to the streams and creating, a free style art, of water marks. I could barely walk on the  broken footpath , as  the sight and smell was unbearable. I crossed across to the opposite side, but that too was, as expected. I believe that’s why the roadside plants look more flourished, casting a shade, over the men, taking a leek break, in the heat.

I had no choice, but to get off the path and walk on the road myself, as the 2 wheelers honked. I was, one of the many, causing the delay, in traffic movement. I returned home with smelly shoes and an unpleasant walk.

Not sure if early mornings have a better feel, but I would now prefer my vehicle with rolled up windows and restrict to myself to my walking area, than experiencing the ‘well watered footpath’.
