Wow….I experienced the fun of watching ‘DANGAL’ live 2 years ago at the Jasola Sports Complex, when our councillor, Neetu and Manish Choudhary had organized a tournament. The experience was repeated in early December 2024. A big ‘thanx’ to Manishji. This time I had the pleasure of enjoying DANGAL in the company of a fellow resident Malini Khatri. We both felt that watching ‘DANGAL’ (traditional wrestling) offered a captivating glimpse into a rich cultural tradition, which, while not as globally recognized as other sports holds a special place in the hearts of many in our Bharat Desh.
Our experience was nothing short of exhilarating, revealing the vibrant community spirit surrounding this sport. We were a bit late but the electricity in the air was just so alive with the hustle bustle of excited spectators including us.
The man matches/bouts were more than just “Wrestling”. Wrestlers clad in their robes stepped into the arena, their muscles tense with readiness. The intense battles soon erupted, each clash accompanied by roars from the crowd and both of us. The people around us were absolutely amused by the fact there was a private ‘DANGAL’ taking place between Malini and me where we chose our respective wrestlers whom we wanted to support. The bet we lay with each other was the looser amongst us to treat the winner amongst us to GOLGAPPAS!! Both of us were so embarassed when the compere announced our ‘BET’ on the mike for all to know!!
As the wrestlers grappled under the watchful eyes of an engaged audience, we realized that *dangal* is not just about winning; it is a celebration of resilience and cultural pride. Despite its rich history, ‘dangal’ remains lesser-known on the global sports stage, overshadowed by more commercialized sports like cricket and football. Yet, it provides a platform for local heroes and showcases regional traditions that are deeply cherished.
Leaving the arena, we carried with us not only the thrill of the matches but a deeper appreciation for a sport that deserves more recognition. Watching DANGAL live is an experience rich in community, tradition, and unforgettable memories.
