The Radio Man – Ameen Sayni

An Ameen Sayni memorial night titled The Radio Man was held at IIC on 2nd June24. The program was presented by LRT and its team members and was written directed and produced by Sarita Vohra.  LRT had presented this play prior to this at a number of places. As we all can guess, with the name of Ammen Sayani, one  goes back to  good old days, of Binaca Geet Mala, conducted by  jenab Ammen Sayani  where this famous program was radioed by radio Ceylon from 8 to 9 pm. Needless to say the audience was not only  entire India, but south and south east Asia as well.

The stage program was crafted very imaginatively into two parts, with the first one a scene of an interview of Ameen Sayani and his wife played by Sudhir Gulyani and Charu Sanan respectively. The interview was conducted by three reporters, Anil Chand, Dipali Bhasin and Taarini respectively.  The interview brought out snippets of Ameen sahibs earlier life and his subsequent progress as a famous programmer.

The second portion really brought action upon the IIC stage. A large number of singers presented songs from Binaca Geet Mala as presented by Ameen Saab from 1953 to 1994. The program started with traditional Ganesh Vandana presented by Sarita Vohra in her captivating sonorus voice. There after singers like, Sarita Vohra, VP Misra, Shikha Rajpal, Sakshar Duggal , Sunil Aurora, Tara Grover, Jimmy Hasija, Kavita Seth, Praful Bakshi, Shefali Duggal, Sunaina Mullick, Dr BK Mohanty, Falguni Talwar  Virat Soni and Kabir. The announcers did tremendous job imitating Ameen Saab.

The audience was transported back by more than fifty years through some of the most famous melodies and songs which entertained millions of us on the radio.

Such was the euphoria created in the hall that two guests from the audience could not control themselves and danced all over the hall, to the lilting melodies.  The program ended with the entire lot singing Khai ke Pan Banaraswala.

Each and every one in the audience in the packed hall thanked Ameen Sayani for his incomparable contribution to the world of Music, and LRT  group for having created the evening for them.
