The Price of Decency

Societal support for decent people is very often not forthcoming

My parents always said to me ‘vidya dadati vinayam’, which means – ‘education gives one humility and politeness’. This shaped my philosophy of interpersonal relationships. However, I have seen that very often people these days take politeness and humility as a sign of weakness, especially those who tend to be rude and domineering in their interactions with others. One should realize that decency and humility can be combined with firmness, fairness and uprightness – qualities essential in every walk of life, especially for harmonious community living.

Many educated and well-placed people also sometimes take a stand based not on principles but personal vested interest during discharge of their professional res-ponsibilities.They resort to pressurizing others to toe their line and refuse to listen to any sane advice. With the dominance of social media these days, such people very often launch an attack with their rude and offensive messages even resorting to character assassination of the person with whom they disagree. A polite and decent person cannot resort to such actions. Herein lays the price one has to pay for one’s decency. Unfortunately   societal support for decent people is very often not forthcoming.

It is extremely important for people living in gated colonies that everyone follows the norms and guidelines of community living and civil behaviour. This alone can improve the quality of life, of the residents.
