As the new SHO, Sanjay Sharma has been operational for the last six months. Samvada editor Ajay Kumar met him personally to know about his understanding and security plans for Defence Colony. The following are the details of this interaction for our readers:
Ajay Kumar (Editor): First of all, greetings from Samvada for completing the first six months of your tenure in Defence Colony as SHO. As promised, we are back to know about your experience, actions, and plans for the colony.
Sanjay Sharma (SHO): Thanks, Ajay Ji, for your regular interaction with me and my team about the security issues. Yes! These six months have been quite busy as my team and I have been on our toes to ensure better security for the residents of Defence Colony. As per my understanding, the following are the security issues that are faced by the residents and the reasons identified by us:
• The Defence Colony is open from all sides, which makes it vulnerable to crimes. More than 15 colony gates are open throughout the day to make it porous and easy for anyone to enter or exit from the colony without any checks. Our beat constables keep taking rounds, but that’s not enough as we are always short of staff as per the areas allocated to our police station.
• Senior citizens are also quite vulnerable to crimes, as many of them stay alone or with support staff, which keeps changing with time. Most of the support staff (more than 4000) keeps changing without any police verification or KYC checks by the employers due to various reasons. We request all the residents to do the police verification of every new security guard or domestic help to remain safe.
• The central park and other parks are also visited by outsiders who may be responsible for some petty crimes. There are many unauthorised vendors who may also be the reason for some crimes. We request the RWA to allow only limited vendors in the specified timings in the colony. Home deliveries are also at the highest, and these people keep entering homes on the pretext of deliveries, which may add to more crimes. Please try to minimise these transactions and also take deliveries safely outside the house.
Ajay Kumar: What are the incidents of crimes taking place in and around Defence Colony?
Sanjay Sharma: I am pleased to share that the overall crimes are quite lower than earlier in the last six months due to our prompt action, proper follow-ups, and use of new techniques to nab the criminals. One of my best constables, Sachin, has been the front-runner with his zeal to minimise the crimes through proper follow-ups of each complaint. He has successfully solved more than 15 cases in the last 2-3 months by tracking mobile crime trails and proper follow-up of criminals till he nabs them. We have done special planning for the winters when criminals are quite active due to festivals and people going for long holidays and successfully minimised the crimes. Lastly, we at Samvada request all our readers to please be vigilant at all times and follow basic security measures as follows:
• All new or old staff must be properly verified by the police (even the family members of the staff).
• Keep your front gates and main door closed at all times, and use double doors to check the visitors, delivery boys, vendors, etc.
• Install security gadgets, CCTV, alarms, etc., to be safe at all times.
• Never discuss financial matters or money in front of the staff, never send them to banks, and keep very little money or ornaments at home.
