I have been visiting Durga Pandals and Ramlilas for several years. Slowly, the culture part seems to be taking a backseat. I can understand the security protocols, but the gaiety has overshadowed the spirit behind the cultural aspect of the events.
The emphasis is on glamorous entertainment with Dandiyas, DJs and Rajasthani dances, a la Bollywood. Some rue the absence of the old charm.
Get hold of any one person from such an event;s / he will be unable to decipher the story of the deities being worshipped. Our children are the main sufferers in the sense that while they know stories about the western Gods, do not understand why they are there.
No one preaches morals, Indian culture and its future implications. There is a social awareness being built though – a narrative about knowing our own culture and customs.
Come October and it is time for mildly – roasted human beings to get relief from the scorching Sun. Festivity is in the air across the country & in Wishtown. At many places in Noida, more than one committee organizes these festivals.
Often, there is rivalry. More often, it is unhealthy. Every committee wants to outdo others; it gets manifested into collecting more funds than the rival ones.People skip their routine jobs to collect funds in the name of God.
I am not finding a fault. Money IS essential too, to glamorize the event, so that people get attracted to come even as a family outing. But, perhaps, this makes the cultural aspect take a backseat. I would love to see a classical dance drama depicting the death of Mahishasur, the demon Devi Maa killed. Also the evergreen, spectacular Ramlila, which has not lost even a shred of its charm over the centuries…
