The Illumination of GK2 Parks

“The poetry of the earth is never dead”. These Kea-tsian words hold the most true for GK2 parks in this lovely season. The variety of flora and fauna attracts not just area residents but admirers from across NCR. Throngs of morning and evening walkers have been coming to these parks for decades. The camaraderie involves having mini-celebrations like birthdays and holding picnics in pleasant seasons.

However, these parks at night  had become the haunt for unsocial elements due to the absence of proper lighting for years. Unpleasant instances were reported to have occurred between residents and unwanted elements in the blanket of darkness. Residents sought the help of area MLA Sh Saurabh Bharadwaj. A few years back, he had taken the issue of security, in particular for women in Jahanpanah City Forest under DDA, very seriously and started his morning walks in the forest to send a message to miscreants.

The subject of lighting in GK2 parks is under MCD, but the issue of darkness had not seen resolution for years. Hence, to give relief to residents, he decided that MLA funds would be given to install new lights in GK2 parks. In June 2023, the illumination started with hundreds of bollard lights installed in W-block Park. This was followed by the June and July 2023 inauguration of hundreds of bollard lights, decorative pole lights and high mast lights installation in E block Sehgal Market 1 park and E block Sehgal Marlet 2 park. While the bollard and pole lights light up the walking track, the newly installed high mast lights illuminate any leftover dark spots. A very comprehensive approach taken for the three most visited parks in our colony.

Our parks need serial efforts with two purposes: to reduce influx of unsocial elements and to improve visits by women and children. These measures have been applauded by residents. We need all authorities to come together and work with residents in an approachable fashion, to improve the security and beauty of our parks.
