Trees keep falling in GK-2 with alarming regularity. As many as five incidents of tree falling have occurred in the past few months and around 20 complaints for tree pruning made by the residents are pending. You never know when a tree might come down on you while you are moving inside the colony.
Barely had we recovered from the shock of a huge tree crashing down on the nearby houses and some parked cars in S Block a few days back that we got the news of yet another such mishap that occurred on 1st June‘24. The branches of a large tree opposite Talwar Nursing Home in E Block snapped and fell on the road late in the evening. Luckily, nobody was hurt in this incident. We cannot however afford to keep our fingers crossed and live by luck all the time.
The fact of the matter is that the trees in our colony are in a state of utter neglect. It has been ages since these were pruned and they keep tilting under the weight of their own foliage. At quite a few places, trees are dangerously leaning on the nearby houses and it is just a tragedy that is waiting to happen. While everyone seems to be falling over backward to claim the credit for prompt coordination with the civic agencies for removal of the debris once a tree has fallen, nobody is doing anything worthwhile to prevent occurrence of such tragedies.
The RWA must get the Horticulture Department to assess the condition of the trees in the colony and take immediate remedial measures where required. RWA should get a lawyer to file a PIL in the concerned Court to seek judicial directions to the Horticulture Department to conduct an audit of the trees in GK-2 and take prompt corrective actions as necessary. After all, it is a matter concerning human lives and cannot be taken lightly. The consequences of something disastrous happening in future as a result of falling trees can be quite grave and we must not wait for that to happen. Prevention is always better than cure.
