The 25th of May, Saturday, was considered the celebration of Democracy, in India, a country that is considered the melting pot of various cultures, religions and customs, a country where every other day is a festival celebration, a country that is the biggest Democracy in the world! I am a proud Indian voter, who was given this opportunity to select the best few amongst us to govern the nation, so why won’t I utilize my right to do so?
A family of four were assigned different poling stations so the task at hand was tedious but we finished one by one. The poling stations were very well managed, clean and properly staffed, Bisleri bottles were provided that laid around the whole place – we seem to lack the civic sense, nothing new, the big fans and coolers were at every corner, and more gratifying was the helping nature of the staff.
The story was not the same for all as some polling stations could not provide such luxuries, I saw people standing without a shade in the sun but the lines were moving fast, still kudos to voters who decided to exercise voting in such adverse climate. I saw excitement and enthusiasm amongst voters as they chatted, standing in the queue for their turn. Many eateries were giving ten percent discount for those who cast the votes, the black ink finger was the centre of attraction that day as all roads were leading towards the polling booths. The whole world was watching India vote and we celebrated well!
