On Saturday, 15 April, Hamlet pledged to start segregating its waste as wet and dry –Segregation is the first step we hope to take towards being a green Hamlet. The pledge comes on the back of a growing environmental awareness amongst Hamletians, witness as we have been to burning landfills in Sector 105 in the past few months.
Also weighing heavy on our mind are the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 which mandate that all Bulk Waste Generators must responsibly ‘handle’ their green waste. Penalty is as high as INR 60 Lakhs. The reasons to make the green switch is a long list, each reason more convincing than the last.
We also have around us positive precedents of communities like ATS Village & Supertech Emerald Court that have been successfully practicing Segregation.
The less than a month-old Segregation effort was so far being led by a resident-based Volunteer group led by Vijay Bhalla (14GF2). The efforts of the group were able to wake the community to this new way of life but ensuring the talk becomes the walk has been a challenge.
While many residents have been pro-active in separating their households’ Dry & Wet waste, many, indeed most, continue to give out their waste in mixed heaps without segregation.
To correct this wrong, we are investing our faith in our new Facility Manager Hrishikesh Parashar. Hrishikesh comes from ATS Village, a community with a long history of being conscientious segregators. We are hoping to be able to leverage his rich work experience to make segregation a way of life in Hamlet.
The Volunteer Group remains active under the leadership of BhallaJi & will work to support our facility team. We are determined to ensure our community becomes a haven and a source of positivity for not just us, its residents, but also the larger ecosystem around us.
With that goal in sight, we will continue to make efforts towards Segregation.
