The 10 Commandments of Being a Good Neighbour

by Priya Parul Singh (11254)

When we live in a community, we have privileges but, at the same time, we have obligations too. Most of us like to spend our days happily & peacefully but an annoying neighbour may
ensure we do not get to have that.
I turned this around & asked myself, “Am I a good neighbour?” and “Am I ensuring my community members are not getting angry because of me?” So, I took the liberty of drawing up 10 commandments that must guide the way of living in a society for each of us.
(For simplicity, I use the term neighbour. It comprises all fellow occupants who live near us & get affected by our daily activities.)
Thou shalt not undertake any construction work in your flat that causes disruption to others for an extended period.
Thou shalt undertake drilling and/ or hammering work in your flat only during the specified hours.
Thou shalt not place your household items in the common areas.
Thou shalt not place your garbage in front of others’ dwellings.
Thou shalt not throw anything (including garbage) down from your balconies.
Thou shalt play music only at a level that does not disturb others.
Thou shalt not engage in any criminal and/ or violent activity in your flat or in the common areas.
Thou shalt ensure your guests/ visitors do not disturb the peace & privacy of others.
Thou shalt get to know your neighbours & strive to maintain an amicable relationship.
Lastly, thou shalt deal with any issues with your neighbours and/ or facilities service providers in a calm & respectful way.
So, how many of these do you already do?
