On the morning of 23 September 2024, Gulmohar Club premises witnessed around 30-40 members of New Delhi Ladies’ Club (NDLC) gathered to benefit from an hour of probono talk on ‘Basic Legal Awareness for Senior Citizens’ delivered by the Guest Speaker, Advocate Apoorva Thakur. She is a NET-qualified Assistant Professor, Partner of Delhi-based law firm MKA Legal Law Offices and Director of LAWGYSTIX Foundation. The session was followed by guest-felicitation by Mrs. Kumud Grover and other prominent figures of NDLC, and sumptuous lunch for all attendees.
The talk began with Adv. Thakur introducing about the legislative frameworks at present for the benefit and welfare of senior and super senior citizens, citing principles from our Constitution. She discussed about the uniqueness of the special law of 2007, Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act and various Government initiatives and schemes like PMMY, Ayushman Bharat, AVYAY, PMVVY, NPHCE, helplines, etc. She further detailed out tips while engaging in builder contracts/housing agreements. Crucial topics like Will preparation and estate planning were also talked about. Legal facets in common domains like health, safety, work/business, property/wealth management were touched upon through examples.
The session was lively, insightful and interactive, with several attendees raising general and person-specific queries after the talk. Such programs with elements of knowledge-dispensation by industry-experts and free professional consultations/doubt-resolution help in subtly tackling multiple issues being silently faced by many elderly ladies, and hence must be encouraged.
