Talk On Beneficial Herbs In AIKGA

The AIKGA meeting on 16th November 2023 was about the health benefits of herbs and to prevent the damage of environmental pollution on our health. The main herb that was talked about was basil that is Tulsi which not only has spiritual value but a number of health benefits as well. There are 50 types of basil, however  we use about 3 to 4 varieties here in Delhi. With Tulsi as in other herbs we can make a decoction out of it instead of just chewing. This decoction helps not only in maintaining physical health but also improves mental health.

The other herb is Thyme. It is very much known to us and it’s quite similar to Tulsi. Herbs like basil, Tulsi, thyme and haldi can be used in the form of the decoction. They can also be dried, crushed and used as garnish over salads and foods. Cooking these herbs takes away a lot of nutrients. Using them as garnish or in the form of decoctions is preferable.

The decoction of these herbs can be easily made at home. Take a pan, boil water and to this boiling water add the herb. Then switch off the flame and cover the pan. Once the water cools down, strain and keep it ready for use.

Another herb that you can eat fresh as garnish is nastracium. Pennywort ajwain can also be used as garnish. There are Thai  basils and Italian basils. Both have their own benefits. Tulsi increases body immunity, Lowers BP and blood sugar and releases anxiety.

Kari patta can also be had for diabetes, blood pressure, asthma and even indigestion. It can also be used to cure acne. Karipatha oil can also be made by steeping curry patta in the oil that you want to use. You can use this oil for hair problems as well and to increase hair growth.

Another herb that can be used for its medicinal benefits is aloe vera. The leaf of the aloe vera plant can be broken and the gel that comes out can be used for skin benefits. Some people also make a halwa out of it in the form of a chyawanprash and use it for building body immunity.

You can also make oil by boiling methi dana, curry leaves, amba haldi and hibiscus flower. For body massage and hair massage this oil can be used on a regular basis or you can make a decoction out of it and consume it as well.

Pudina and Tulsi nowadays need to be saved from frost. For this, put a cloth on it to prevent frost from falling directly on it. There are some flowers that are good for eating. Edible flowers are nastoastracium, pepper boat, then there are leaves like lettuce, parsley, celery.  Green grapes and celery soup are quite beneficial. Fennel can be had raw and the leaves can be used in soups. Methi dana can be used as sprouts.  It removes bad breath and improves digestion. Another herb Brahmi can be used but not on a daily basis, it can be had twice in a week. It improves your memory. Ajwain and lemon grass also increases your memory and helps in overall immunity.

Members were delighted to learn about so many health benefits and looked forward to the next meeting.
