Sunshine Helios’ War on Plastic Waste

As a resident of Sunshine Helios, I’ve had the privilege of being part of a community that’s passionate about protecting the environment. For the past nine years, our com-munity has been actively working towards reducing plastic waste, and I’m thrilled to share my experience with this initiative.

Every Saturday morning, a van from the Indian Pollution Control Association (IPCA) arrives at our premises to collect plastic waste. It’s amazing to see how much plastic we’ve been able to collect and recycle – approximately 15-20 kg every week! At times, it’s even more, ranging from 30-32 kg.

I’m proud to be part of a team that’s efficient and enthusiastic about waste management. Our team, consisting of Nibha Vasudeva, Priyanka Kulshrestha, Pooja Mehrotra, Vandana Sharma, Archana Sharma, Rashi Wadhwa, Nidhi Marwah, Ekta Shikha Priya, and I, have made significant progress in reducing plastic waste, and it’s inspiring to see how our efforts are making a difference.

But what’s even more remarkable is what happens to the plastic waste after it’s collected. The IPCA recycles the plastic and uses it to create useful items like walls, furniture, benches, and even clothes! We’ve even received a smart dustbin made from 35 kg of plastic waste, courtesy of IPCA.

One of the most innovative solutions we’ve adopted is the Aerobin, a technological breakthrough in home waste management. This smart bin uses thermal insulation to rapidly break down biomass, producing fertile compost that’s perfect for our gardens. We’re also encouraging our children to get involved in environmental protection. They’re learning to plant trees during the monsoon and spring seasons, and we’re teaching them the importance of saving paper, water, and saying no to plastic.

As I reflect on our community’s efforts, I’m reminded of the significance of recycling and reducing waste. By working together, we can make a positive impact on the environment. Let’s pledge to be more environmentally friendly and make the most of our waste through recycling.
