Suncity held its first ever soccer cup on 22nd and 23rd March. It was met with enthusiastic support and participation from the residents. Residents turned up to support the event, cheering for players.
The event had two categories; a senior and a junior category. The matches for the senior category were held on 22nd along with a few matches of the junior category. On 23rd, the remaining matches in the junior category and the presentation ceremony was held.
The finish was a thrilling one, on 23rd, with the final match ending in penalty shootout. The finale of the match ended up in a tie when the blue team scored a goal in the last minute. This led to a penalty shootout for the final. The stakes were high and the pressure was on. It was now about who could keep calm and focus. The parents, audience and coaches all held their breath as each player took their position before the goal. The shootout ended in blue victory as they gleefully celebrated as the first junior category winners of the Suncity Soccer Cup.
In the presentation ceremony, various awards were presented. There were individual player awards like player of the match, player of the tournament and goalkeeper of the tournament. The runners up trophy and the winners’ trophy were held up with enthusiasm and pride by the players and the coaches. The goalkeeper of the winning team (blue), Aanya, said that the effort put by the team in the practices is what led them to this win. She talked about team collaboration and effort to advance in the matches of the tournament.
This event was organized by the Suncity sports community as an initiative to encourage people to play the sport and practice healthy living. Mr. Abhimanyu Khanna, coach of the blue team and a part of the organizing committee for this tournament, commented on the importance of sports in community as well as how it helps foster learning in children from a very young age. He talked about the spirit of the game and how sports can enrich one’s life.
The tournament proved to be a grand success with residents joining in to cheer and support.
