Our Hamlet musical club, spearheaded by music Maestro Alok Sahdev (5161), organised Sudip Mukherjee Musical Nite in our clubhouse on Wednesday, 2 October. There can not be a better start than a ‘Musical Nite’ to usher in the festive season.
Also, it was the start of the auspicious Navratri celebrations and the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.
Sudip, an engineer by profession, an IIT DELHI ALUMNUS, hails from New Jersey, USA. He is a versatile vocalist whose range includes classical Hindi songs and ghazals besides normal Bollywood songs.
It was nice of Sudip to find time from his busy and short India visit to entertain us Hamletians.
The program began with back-to-back performances by the youngest budding artist of AOH, Abir Sahdev, grandson of our Alok and Nilu Sahdev. He set the tone and high bar for the senior artists. Richa, Prabha, Prabhat, Atul and Alok entertained the knowledgeable audience, before the Guest Artist(s) took to the stage.
It was our privilege that Ms Divya Mehta agreed to showcase her talent to Hameltians. Divya is a Maths teacher in Kothari International school, Sector 50. She enthralled us with a peppy ‘Punjabi Tappa’, electrifying the atmosphere and then followed it with a soulful gazal ‘आज जाने की जिद ना करो’ (Originally sung by the famous Farida Khanum).
The fact that Divya sang both numbers of contrasting musical genres with equal ease, was very much appreciated by the informed audience.
Now was the time for our Artist of the Evening to don the stage. Sudip gave away a dozen non-stop performances consisting of peppy, romantic, classic Kishore Kumar numbers culminating in the all-time favourite dance number. मेरी उम्र के नौजवानों, दिल ना लगाना ओ दीवानों— bringing one and all from the audience to the dance floor.
Musical performances were interjected by a humorous couplet by HarDilAziz Romi, an alumnus of Hamlet, generating loud laughter in the packed function hall. None of our programmes is complete without the signature song – अभी ना जाओ छोड़ कर, ये दिल अभी भरा नही — sung by our versatile all-round performer Satish Rewari.
The High Tea was served and sponsored by Youngistaan Adda.
