Guess who dropped in for a surprise visit to GK2? None other than Sudha Murthy. When the message came, it was late afternoon announcing her arrival the next morning. It was too good to be true – so with a sense of disbelief, I cross-checked with the bookstore owner she was scheduled to visit. Just recently, I met the celebrated author who has written about the lives of Sudha & Narayan Murthy – a couple who need no introduction.
Having read the book, I had nurtured an ardent desire to meet this amazing woman in person. I did not know my wishes would be granted so soon. Being a Sunday morning, it seemed a bit difficult but the sheer excitement of seeing, meeting and hearing her – up close and personal was motivation enough.
I ensured I reached ahead of the scheduled time – not to miss an opportunity to chat with her one-on-one. And sure enough, I did get the chance – not only to get a personally signed copy of one of her books but talk to her as well. Dressed in a crisp cotton saree – simple and elegant – she exudes a charm that appeals to one and all.
Sudha Murthy has a deep connection with children through her writing and philanthropic efforts. She actively engages with children during her public appearances, book readings, and interactions at events. Her approachable demeanour and storytelling abilities make her popular among young audiences. It is no surprise then, that the hall was full – a mix of young children, teenagers and adults too. A highly interesting and interactive session laced with wisdom and laughter followed much to the delight of everyone. As the session ended almost everyone queued up to get their books signed by her. She happily posed for pictures and selfies as she headed out for another session to another book store in the vicinity – promising to be back as she is now a member of the Rajya Sabha and would be visiting Delhi often.
Her work continues to have a positive impact on the lives of young readers and communities across India and beyond. We look forward to many such sessions and interactions in future and hope the younger generations can learn from her experience through her books.
