For me, the feeling of contributing towards our environment has been unlike any other. A clean and green environment has always given me a comforting and peaceful state of being. The thought of being in a dirty and polluted surrounding gives me a feeling of being an irresponsible human and citizen.
This is how it started, I made it my goal to improve the environment and started searching in my neighbourhood. I soon got connected with a neighbour, who put us in touch with a few NGO’s such as Why Waste Wednesdays, Bisleri Bottle 4 Change and Indian Pollution Control Association (IPCA) who collect waste plastic and recycle to manufacture road material, floor tiles, and many kinds of furniture.
Together with other concerned people in my neighbourhood, we started collecting all kinds of waste plastics from many households like plastic bottles, wrappers, containers and gave these to the NGOs. During the month of September, we collected and deposited around 500kg of plastic waste and the NGOs rewarded us with a fully recycled plastic outdoor park bench. So, we saved our environment by preventing this large amount of waste going into the landfills, and instead got a recycled piece of furniture that is being used by park users.
This effort has instilled in me a sense of satisfaction for being able to do positive work for my environment, and hopefully I can convince others to do this simple task and save the environment and become a responsible human and a citizen.
