Early in January this year, the Society and Vasant Vihar Welfare Association (VVWA) held a joint meeting with the Dy. Commissioner, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, and Dy. Commissioner of Police (Traffic). The object was to identify the problems and work with the two agencies to find the solutions. The Society was represented by Deepak Mishra, president, Girish Sareen, vice-president and VVWA was represented by Gurpreet Singh Bindra, president, and Parul Gaur, director (Operations).
A brief synopsis of the two meetings is given below:
A detailed discussion was held with Badal Kumar, Dy. Commissioner (MCD) on Waste Management. Emphasis was placed on the closure of dhalaos. The Dy. Commissioner stated that it was also MCD’s policy to close the dhalaos. However, in order to close these dhalaos, VVWA has to ensure a desired level of waste segregation at the individual household level. This is currently not the situation in Vasant Vihar. He also said that if the situation does not improve, MCD will be constrained to take corrective action for failure to segregate waste at the individual household level.
The question of land allocation for the purposes of composting was also taken up. Badal Kumar instructed his staff to visit Vasant Vihar and see to the allocation of land.
As regards encroachments, the Dy. Commissioner stated that he would ask his staff to draw up a comprehensive plan of action in consultation with VVWA. He further stated that action would be taken once the Model Code of Conduct is revoked.
The traffic and parking issues were also discussed at length with Dhal Sing, DCP (Traffic). During these discussions, Ram Kumar, Inspector, was also present.
Each school was discussed in detail, and necessary instructions were given by the DCP to his field staff to take necessary action and ensure that the traffic moves smoothly.
As regards parking in the markets, the DCP instructed his staff to draw up traffic plans for each market separately.
Both meetings ended with an understanding that regular meetings would be held to ensure results.
