When the first bricks of Slim Homes were laid in 2017, little did we realise that our passion to restore the natural ecosystems would lead us to a labyrinthine maze of work that could be done at the micro level.
This includes:
1. Effective management of household waste so that it does not end up in landfills,
2. Minimising the use of single use plastics and promoting/facilitating the use of alternatives to disposables.
3. Encouraging the use of water aerators
4. Motivating people to de-clutter and donate their ‘extras’ to Slim Homes so that they may be sold at garage sales.
5. Distribution of saplings from outlets in Vasant Kunj as well as Gurgaon.
6. Awareness Campaigns at schools, colleges and in residential colonies to sensitise people towards the environment.
Slim Homes kick started its innings at D3/4 Vasant Kunj, New Delhi. The first awareness programme was held at the D3/4 Community Centre on the 18 th of February 2018. Thereafter there was the ECOFEST on 31 st August 2019 and the most recent program, focusing on the value of segregation of household Waste, was held on 7 th October 2023. In partnership with WOW (Well- being Out of Waste), Slim Homes started with a Door-to-Door Awareness Campaign in the 700+ flats. Training programs of the garbage pickers, safai karamcharis and gardeners were conducted periodically by SSIL. Natural Pit composting was started in August 2019. Until January 2023, D3/4 Vasant Kunj had diverted around 3,52,800 kg of wet waste away from the landfills. Unfortunately, stiff citizen resistance brought the natural pit composting to a halt in the middle of 2023. Some efforts are being made by installation of Aerobins by IPCA, although as yet only a fraction of the wet waste generated in the colony can be handled by them. We hope we come to a point where no wet waste leaves our colony as is happening presently.
Since 2017 Slim Homes Sales are held at the Diwali Melas in D3/4 Vasant Kunj. Several sales have been held near the Safal booth, amply supported by the RWA. Slim Homes opens its doors to anyone who wants to volunteer their services towards living in a clean environment and in harmony with the flora and fauna on Planet Earth.
