In early March, I was admitted to the emergency ward due to food poisoning. Once my vitals got stabilized, I was transferred to a room which I was supposed to share with an elderly couple in their late 50s, who were there for the wife’s ear surgery.
Throughout the day, we engaged in light conversations, offering brief distractions from medical procedures. However, as night fell, their snoring and occasional arguments disrupted the already uncomfortable rest for both me and my husband.
Adding to the challenge was their insistence on keeping the light on of their side, further disturbing our sleep.
While I understood the husband’s concern for his wife, it became evident that they overlooked the inconvenience they were causing to others.
By sharing this incident I would like to draw the reader’s attention that it is not essential for hospital patients and their attendants to show empathy toward fellow patients, regardless of age, and to be considerate of their needs.
While medical emergencies can understandably lead to stress and discomfort, showing kindness towards fellow patients can greatly improve everyone’s experience. Let us strive to foster an environment of mutual respect and understanding, where the needs of all are acknowledged and respected, ultimately contributing to the well-being of each individual within the healthcare setting.
