Segregation Of Waste

by Rachna Tiwary

World over segregation of the waste is a compulsory practice followed by all else one has to give hefty fine to the municipality. In India however we have not been able to implement the same despite the efforts put in by the civic authorities. The public needs to be aware of its benefits. Many states in the south and North East have been successfully carrying out this drive and Indore in MP is the cleanest city due to its excellent handling of waste and its disposable. Delhi despite being the capital is lagging behind.

In the recent past when all the MCD‘s of Delhi were unified and Nodal officers were appointed in place of councillors we saw a drastic change in the functioning of MCD. The way works were being done efficiently without any political bias was amazing. Nodal officer for our ward Atul Bhardwaj won hearts of everyone by his efficiency, dedicated systematic works which were executed in record time. No politics was involved. DC Ankita Chakravarty is to be appreciated for her proactive approach and her accessibility to RWA’s . She along with the nodal officer has been working very hard for the waste segregation Programme. Many teams governmental as well as many NGO’s have been roped in by her for this purpose. MCD’s teams have been going door to door to spread awareness among residents about the necessity of waste segregation at the source to reduce the burden of waste on the dhalaos of Delhi. Delhi has earned name as the kachra pahad city of the country.

Do we as educated residents sit silently and do nothing to get rid of this “kachre ke pahad’? If we all start home composting the kitchen waste we will tremendously help the authorities and also get rich manure for our household plants. And if one can not do that then the least we can do is to give our wet, dry and electronic waste separately to the MCD pick up vans and to the private garbage collectors.
