Every few weeks, brief messages on colony WhatsApp groups inform residents of one or the other incident of petty theft in the colony. These may be related to thefts of sewer covers, water pumping motors, car mirrors, bicycles, grills or something much more valuable.
A few hours of outrage follow every time such an incident is reported. A few residents post messages for a collective effort to improve security infrastructure in South City-1. Indeed, a few blocks and lanes have worked towards creating a secure area by voluntary contributions from residents. While residents in those areas may feel secure, such small patches of secure areas are not enough to make most residents of South City-1 secure.
South City-1 is a large colony spread over 300 acres across three distinct sectors with many blocks having direct access to adjoining villages. These blocks are particularly vulnerable as they must provide right of access to residents of these villages.
With over a dozen access points to outside remote areas and about a dozen entry points from the main sector roads, a comprehensive security plan is required for our colony. This plan must include deployment of guards, a team to manage guard deployment, a mobile quick-response-team that is mobile. The security staff must also have daily coordination with local police.
Attempts by SCRWA EC to involve all residents and seek monthly or quarterly contribution have not been successful at the colony level till now. Block and lane level volunteers need to come together if we want a secure South City-1.
All volunteers willing to work towards this are requested to share their ideas by writing to scrwa.gurgaon@gmail.com.
