About 3-4 weeks ago, workers were seen working hard in the sultry weather on the Block-C side of the ‘BC Road’ making use of brick and cement to make a little boundary wall at a distance
of one meter (all around) away from the trunk of the tree in an attempt to protect the soil around the tree from slipping away. Needless to say, that this would have made a hole in the finances. When more than half of the stretch was completed, suddenly, one day, some people came and demolished the little boundary wall saying that this amounted to “concretisation of trees” which may weaken the trees. It is stated that this was a result of many complaints having been made on the green helpline of the Forest Department by an NGO and some Environment friendly residents of NFC. When asked, MCD said that the norms were followed and that planters/boundary wall had been constructed after leaving one meter space, kaccha portion all around and as per site availability.
This tussle between MCD, the NGO, and the environmentalists sure made huge holes in the financial tank of MCD. Either MCD should’ve ensured that the work they were carrying out was exactly as per the norms, or they should’ve had a meeting with the environmentalists to ensure a common satisfactory way. ‘Finance’ required to carry out such work, is after all the hard-earned money of residents paid in taxes. Hence, it is required to be used efficiently!!
