Recently many cases of tree felling by the builders have come to the notice of RWA. Many builders have cut precious old trees in order to create more parking in their new housing projects.
One such example is the house under construction which has come under fire and residents are complaining about it. Following is the note received from Ria Das “Greetings Sir, House no. C-4/40 is currently undergoing major construction, and a tree near their property has been encased in concrete. I am concerned that if no action is taken, the tree may die. In the past, the RWA has intervened to ensure residents comply with the 6×6 space rule for non-concretisation, as seen with the house near St. Anthony, previously known as “Indo-German.” I am attaching a brief write-up along with pictures on the issue to raise awareness among more residents and have also sent an email to RWA in this regard. I kindly request your prompt attention and indulgence to this matter. Thank you for your time and consideration. Best regards, Ria Das R/O C-4/23, Safdarjung Development Area. Mobile: 9650853215
This is not a single case. Many such buildings are under construction and if each builder cuts 2-3 trees then think of the number of trees that would be cut in the colony in the garb of construction. Such reckless destruction of greens is resulting in unprecedented heat wave which we all are facing this year and it will get worse every following year if our green cover is systematically destroyed like this.
Effects of Deforestation on our Ecology And Environment. The heat wave, characterized by consistently high temperatures and sparse rainfall, has taken a toll on the city’s inhabitants, ecosystems, and infrastructure. As we grapple with the sweltering climate, it’s clear that the time for action is now. Planting trees is a simple yet powerful solution to combat deforestation and mitigate its devastating effects. The Impact of Deforestation on Climate Deforestation is the large-scale removal of trees and forests, often to make way for urban development, agriculture, and other land-use changes. Trees play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of our environment. They sequester carbon dioxide, release oxygen, and regulate temperatures by providing shade and facilitating the water cycle. In Delhi, the green cover has shrunk alarmingly due to rampant urbanization. The resulting loss of trees has significantly contributed to the urban heat island effect, where concrete and asphalt absorb and retain heat, leading to higher temperatures. The absence of trees also reduces humidity levels and disrupts rainfall patterns, further exacerbating the heat wave conditions. Moreover, the environmental fallout is enormous. High temperatures lead to increased evaporation rates, resulting in water scarcity. A single mature tree can transpire hundreds of liters of water per day, significantly cooling the immediate area. By planting trees, we can create green buffers that protect our environment and our health.
A Call For Action: It’s time to take collective action. Planting trees is a practical, effective, and sustainable solution to combat the adverse effects of deforestation. Community involvement is crucial. Here are some steps we can take: 1.Community Tree-Planting Drives: Organize community events to plant trees in local parks, schoolyards, and public spaces. Collaborate with local NGOs and environmental groups to maximize reach and impact. 2. Green Roofs and Vertical Gardens: Encourage the adoption of green roofs and vertical gardens in urban buildings. These green spaces not only reduce temperatures but also improve air quality and enhance the aesthetic appeal of our city. 3. Reforestation Projects: Support reforestation initiatives that restore degraded forest lands. Advocate for policies that protect existing forests and expand green cover. 4. Education and Awareness: Raise awareness about the importance of trees and the impacts of deforestation. Educate children and adults alike on the benefits of planting and caring for trees.
Conclusion the unprecedented heat wave in Delhi is a stark reminder of the critical role trees play in our environment. By taking immediate and sustained action to plant trees, we can mitigate the effects of deforestation, improve public health, and safeguard our planet for future generations. Let us come together to create a greener, cooler, and more resilient Delhi. Let’s plant trees to save our Earth!
