It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Sarvesh Chandra, a distinguished figure in the Indian legal community. He passed away peacefully on the 19th of May 2024 at the age of 84.
Sarvesh Chandra’s illustrious career spanned decades, marked by his tenure as the Chairman of the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act (FERA) Tribunal and his significant contributions as a leader in the Law Ministry. His expertise and leadership in these roles were instrumental in shaping legal precedents and policies that have had a lasting impact on the country.
As Chairman of the FERA Tribunal & as the first Chairperson FEMA Tribunal, Chandra navigated complex financial cases with wisdom and integrity, earning respect and admiration from his peers and the public alike. His tenure was characterized by a commitment to fairness and a deep understanding of the legal nuances governing India’s financial regulations.
In the Law Ministry, Sarvesh Chandra was a guiding force, known for his sharp legal acumen and his dedication to upholding justice. He played a crucial role in several landmark legal reforms and was a mentor to many young lawyers who looked up to him for guidance and inspiration.
Beyond his professional achievements, Chandra was a beloved family man and a pillar of his community. He was known for his humility, kindness, and unwavering dedication to his work and family.
After his retirement from the Law Ministry, Chandra was a founder-member of ICADR, the International Council for Alternate Dispute Resolution, where he made his mark as an Arbitrator with a difference. He would frequently ask the parties to send their representatives who had direct access to the top decision makers, rather than lawyers stating – I’m here to guide you both on the points of Law. Let’s wrap this up fast.
Chandra was also the President of the Vision India Foundation. An NGO comprising experts in every field. The foundation would pick up matters of public interest, investigate options and suggest to the governments, the best ways to solve the issues.
Sarvesh Chandra leaves behind a legacy of legal excellence and a life lived with purpose and integrity. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In these moments of grief, we find solace in celebrating a life that was rich in accomplishments and contributions. His memory will continue to inspire and guide us.
The family held a private ceremony to honour his memory. Many people came, wishing to pay their respects.
