A Books For All initiative
Sonali (name changed), a ‘Sankalp’ participant, from Gejha village recalls struggling during a hospital visit with her son. Unable to read signs, she felt lost and powerless. Now, her newfound literacy skills have transformed that anxiety into confidence. “Recently I took my son to the same hospital. I could easily read all the signboards in Hindi” she recounts, pride filling her voice.
Over 35% of rural women still cannot read or write, according to the latest UNESCO data. Without education, they are powerless within their homes and communities. Meanwhile, their children inherit this inter-generational disadvantage.
Sankalp – a Books For All literacy program in Gejha village – is doing its bit to empower women by imparting literacy and much more! For just 1 hour, 3 times a week, Hina, Anshu and Geetika, volunteers from Eldeco and Parsvanath, teach women basic Hindi, English and Math. The dedicated volunteers also take time to understand participants’ lives. They advise them to overcome obstacles independently through confidence and critical thinking.
Sessions on financial literacy, health and hygiene and other engaging activities are strengthening participants socially and mentally. The Sankalp program also provides something equally valuable – a supportive community.
Dear reader, you have the power to spread this empowerment. Encourage your domestic help to invest their spare time gaining knowledge. Together, through compassion and community support, we can reduce illiteracy!
