The recent stampede at Hathras has been an unfortunate event. Stampedes happen now and then at religious gatherings, temples, rallies or even in markets.
Metro stations and Malls are equally at risk for stampedes. Like fire and earthquake, stampede happens unexpectedly and can happen to anyone, rich or poor without considering caste, colour or creed.
We have often seen advisories and videos on safeguarding yourself during fire and earthquakes. But rarely have I seen advisories on how to react during stampedes. The stampedes happen due to excessive pushing by a large number of people, which leads to some people crumbling and falling. Thereafter, others try to run over the fallen people, and, in the process, many more people fall over. The trampling that follows, leads to damage to the stomach, rib cage (lungs and heart) etc. Most of the casualties are due to choking and excessive bleeding, including internal hemorrhages.
Stampedes have higher chances of happening at excessively crowded places, particularly with narrow passages, limited exit openings and particularly on slopes or staircases. Prevention is better than cure. Avoid such places if you can. But if you get caught in such crowded places where pushing has started, immediately fold your two hands, close your fist and keep it close to your chest. Something like a posture a boxer takes. These folded hands help in managing the push. If a group of people take this position in a cluster, they create a massive counter to the push coming from the back. However, if the push is too high and you fall, do not lie flat with your back on the ground as it exposes your stomach and chest. If you cannot get up, roll over to your sides and take a fetal position by curling up and covering your head with both hands. You may still suffer injuries, but the sideways position helps in avoiding grievous injuries. Hope you never have to use this knowledge. Best wishes in life.
