Roots of Disaster: The Hidden Dangers of Urbanization

Live and Let live

In the recent past, a significant number of cases of falling of trees of their own, have been observed in our sector and other places also leading to massive damage to life and property. One of such incidents happened near Shanti Kunj society of our sector a few months ago wherein a washerman family had a narrow escape. This mishap was adequately covered in one of our Samvada 61 Issues. The reason of falling of tree of its own was identified as very limited open space available all around the tree stem on the road sides of the sector. Rest of the roadside is covered either by concrete or by the tiles. There’s hardly any space left for the trees to breathe and flourish to grow. With the result, these trees become week over the period due to roots getting rotten and fall after loss of grip with the soil.

It was heartening to find one fine morning that horticulture wing of Noida Authority has finally realised this fact and started working on this issue. Tiles all around these trees have been removed now to give more open breathing space to trees in the sector near gol chakkar and adjoining areas. Initiative of the concerned authorities for such a gesture to save the nature and environment is commendable. But this effort is only a tip of the iceberg. This concept and implementation needs to be extrapolated and extended further to other areas of the sector and other sectors including societies also to keep the nature intact all around. We must give at least the living green plants enough space to breathe and grow and feel pride in following the golden principle of “Live and let others live”.
