Road Safety Conference

Let me stress in the beginning must be understood with top most importants road safety is a responsibility of every individual and not that of authorities alone said Mr.KK Kapika, with a passion for road safety, after being President of IRF (International Road Federation) for 9 years , presently is President Emeritus. His brain child was 5Es, always stressed that we have to  implement them all together, only then we can achieve our  goal of  “reducing road accidents to 50% by 2030.

IRF-India Chapter (IRF-IC) has been active in Road Safety, functioning since 2005, with its  present President Lt. Gen. Harpal Singh (Rtd.) , in coordination with all concerned ministries , and has a membership of 90 Government and non government organizations, including Automobile manufacturers, suppliers of road safety devices.

In this lecture Mr. Kapila will once again explain 5Es

1E-ENGINEERING OF ROADS – Road safety audit, Design correction & BOQ, Submission to authorities for Bids, Follow up to get the correction done.

2E—ENGINEERING OF CORRECTIONS – Policy interventions retrofilling of (FUPD, SUPD,RUPD, Retro-reflective tapes etc., Advocacy for mandatory safety features in 2 & 4 wheelers, Provision  of  Autolock to reduce drunken driving etc.

3E—EDUCATION — Training of school staff & children on road safety. Introduction of road safety education in schools /education institutions (10%of fatalities occur in school children near schools). Mass awareness to road safety issues through Road Safety Anthem, Films in all indian languages.

4E—Training of police personnel on traffic management in association with IRTE, Training on accident data collection, Knowledge on good samaritan law.

5E—EMERGENCY CARE —Training of Bystanders, vehicle drivers on first aid & trauma care. Identify 10-15 facilities on either side of road stretches: study for gaps in infrastructure &  skilled capacities with the help of AIIMS trauma care resources.  Plan to upgrade medical facilities to L1/L2 trauma centers at least every 100 kms.

• Road safety Anthem already translated in 23 Indian languages.

• Maruti Suzuki has already trained 35000 drivers

• Road safety chapter has already been added in school curriculum. 

Mr. Jehaan Kotwal founder Humsafar spoke about truck drivers’ lack of education, their driving speed, long driving resulting in lack of sleep are the main causes of accidents.

Mr. Amandeep Singh, business Head Avery Dennison stressed on maintenance of traffic signals and their knowledge, 2 wheeler will not  start if the helmet is not worn. Reflectors on helmets and all vehicles including bicycles.
