Rising Incidents of Harassment by Transgender Groups Raise Concerns in Delhi NCR

Residents of Delhi/NCR are raising alarm over the increasing number of harassment cases involving transgender groups. While the traditional practice of seeking money during significant occasions is well understood, the aggressive demands and misbehaviour reported in recent incidents have left many families feeling distressed and vulnerable.

In a recent incident, Ashok, a resident, was reportedly harassed by a group of transgender individuals who demanded Rs.1 lakh after his son’s wedding. When Ashok attempted to negotiate a lower amount, the group allegedly resorted to threats and intimidation.

Similarly, another resident, V.K. Sharma, when  offered Rs.2,100 as a goodwill gesture, the group demanded a much higher amount, causing a lot of trouble and discomfort for the family. Jayant Coomar recounted an incident when his 86-year-old father was alone at home, and a transgender group entered demanding money.

Rakesh Narang shared how they were pressured to pay Rs. 50,000 during house construction. “I had to borrow Rs. 25,000 from a friend to meet their demands,” the resident lamented. Narang said that he still gets emotional while recounting that incident. “I still get tears when I talk about that day.”

Girish Aneja, who has faced similar harassment, emphasised the importance of awareness programs. Aneja offered the following suggestions:

1. Uniform Shagun Amount: Establishing a standard amount for traditional alms.

2. Authentic Representation: Identify who is the legitimate transgender to give alms.

In Hinduism, we believe that their blessings bring prosperity, while their curses can bring misfortune. But at what cost remains a big question mark?
