Athought-provoking discussion emerged during a recent ladies’ meeting, sparked by a resident’s observation that conversations often revolve around maidservants. The topics range from rates and leaves to borrowing maids for a day. This led to a broader question: why have we become so reliant on maidservants?
In the past, women from all walks of life took pride in managing their households, regardless of their social status. They would prepare meals, make pickles, papads, and snacks from scratch. Neighbors would often gather to prepare these items together, fostering a sense of community and cooperation.
Fast-forward to today, and we find ourselves in a different era. While it’s true that life has become more fast-paced, with women taking on professional roles, we can’t help but wonder: have we become too dependent on maidservants?
The western world offers a valuable lesson. Despite their busy schedules, people often work from home and manage their households without relying heavily on external help. In contrast, India’s abundant and affordable labour force has led to a culture of dependency.
So, what’s the solution? To reduce our reliance on maidservants, we need to adopt a more collaborative approach. Families can work together to share household responsibilities, accommodating working mothers and wives. By doing so, we can regain control over our daily lives and foster a sense of self-sufficiency.
It’s time for us to reevaluate our priorities and strive for a better balance between work and home life. We can do better, ladies!
