Residents Trapped in Lift Due to Power Outage

Please Remember the Following Text

An unfortunate incident occurred in one of the societies in Sector 75, where about ten people were stuck in the lift for about half an hour. While this wasn’t a lifethreatening situation, the trapped residents were understandably distressed. It’s clear that many such incidents occur in high-rise buildings due to power supply issues or other reasons, leading to people, including children, getting trapped in lifts for extended periods. As an engineer with knowledge in this field, I want to share some points to increase awareness about lift safety. Here are some highlighted points for residents to be aware of regarding lift safety: 1. In the current summer season, frequent power outages are occurring due to overloaded electric lines. Therefore, the lift can stop suddenly at any time due to power loss. 2. If such a situation occurs, it’s important not to panic and to remain patient. Standard lifts are equipped with safety devices to ensure safe operation. These devices include: A. Overspeed Governor: This device stops the lift if it travels faster than the rated speed, preventing free falls. B. Final Limit Switch: Cuts off power supply to the lift if the upper normal terminal stopping device fails. C. Safety Gear: Allows the lift to brake in case of anomalies during travel. D. Lift Buffer: Prevents damage and injury in the event of overspeed or free fall. E. Some lifts use STM belts, which are stronger and have a longer life than ropes. F. ARD Automatic Rescue Device: Takes the lift to the nearest floors in case of power loss. The above safety devices are provided in Schindler lifts, and the information is from the Schindler lift training team. Some general points to remember: A. In case of a brief power loss, the lift will take you to the nearest floor, and the door will open automatically. Please exit the lift for your safety. B. If the power loss is prolonged, use the intercom in the lift to call emergency numbers or the main society gate for help. Provide your exact location and details. C. Emergency lights and numbers are provided in the lift. If it’s dark, use your mobile phone’s flashlight. D. Ask the maintenance team to provide instructions for using the intercom in both Hindi and English, along with emergency numbers. 4. Speak loudly to guide the rescue team to your exact location. 5. Take care of children, as the situation will be resolved shortly. 6. Attend regular lift training programs or request your maintenance team to conduct them regularly in your society. 7. Ensure that your maintenance contract is with the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) only. Do not force open the lift doors or attempt to exit if the lift is between floors.
